Haye will beat Klitschko

Former world heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis believes David Haye will need a repeat of his performance against Nikolay Valuev if he is to see off Wladimir Klitschko in their eagerly-awaited unification bout in Hamburg next weekend.

Haye secured the WBA heavyweight crown with a brilliant mix of work-rate and accuracy against Valuev in a November 2009 fight that was billed as 'David and Goliath'.

Since that success Haye has been desperate to face Wladimir or his brother Vitali, and he will finally get his wish at the Imtech Arena on Saturday.

But Lewis believes that former cruiserweight king Haye will need to be at his best to cope with the strength of his Ukrainian opponent.

Lewis told BBC Five Live's Sportsweek programme: 'Klitschko is the best right now, he is the man everyone is aiming to get at. It's really tough to be heavyweight champion of the world and it's even tougher to stay there.
'His strength is his size, his reach and his weight. He is a true heavyweight and weighs about 20lbs more than David Haye. He has all those advantages and on paper he is the one they will pick to win because he is a natural heavyweight.

'His weakness is his chin, his speed and maybe his stamina. And they are things that David Haye can expose.

Phone a friend: Lewis believes Haye can beat Klitschko
'His weight is a big thing for Wladimir Klitschko, Haye is light but he can use it to his advantage if he can stay away from him.

'But if they get into a clinch and Klitschko puts his weight on David it may sap some of David's energy.'

While Lewis feels Klitschko may have the edge, he refuses to rule out Haye springing another surprise against a bigger man.

'What makes me give Haye a chance is what he did against Valuev,' he said.

'He fought a perfect fight, he kept moving, he stayed elusive and in the final round he almost knocked Valuev out.

'He has the speed and the weight in his arms and any shot he hits Klitschko with will be a shocking blow.

'Klitschko has the bigger advantages but if David is able to stay with his game plan and move and throw combinations he should do very well.'

England 22 New Zealand 33

England's youngsters gave the Baby Blacks the fright of their lives but still finished on the losing side in the Junior World Cup final.

This New Zealand team are accustomed to chewing up all before them. Their first three Junior World Cups would be better described as search-and-destroy missions than tournaments. Nobody had even come close. England, to their enormous credit, came close.

Up against a side who had never lost a match in this tournament's history, whose worst result was a 14-point victory and who had already racked up 241 points in the last three weeks and conceded only 29, they came out without a shred of fear.

For 20 minutes at least they did not so much as rip up the script as soak it in petrol and set it alight. On a balmy evening in northern Italy, proceedings began with a Maori dance and continued with an English ambush.

The Haka was fierce. It was so well choreographed you sense the Baby Blacks were practising their Kamates in kindergarten while their Anglo-Saxon counterparts were mucking about in the ball pool.

England had a clear plan to use the breeze in the first half and pin New Zealand in their own territory. It worked and the pressure was with England.

Strong defence from a quick lineout forced a turnover and a beautiful inside ball from Owen Farrell found Christian Wade, who stepped back outside - and possibly into touch - before crossing the line. New Zealand scratched their heads but England found themselves 7-0 up.

It was a brutal, adult encounter with hard hits and harsh lessons.

The Baby Blacks struggled to hold on to possession but when they did they looked threatening and it was only thanks to a try-saving intervention from Henry Thomas that they did not reply immediately.

A prop is not supposed to be able to stop a winger in the five-metre channel but that is exactly what Thomas did. Midway through the first half England were caught napping when New Zealand took another quick lineout.
Hooker Codie Taylor burst into space and, alongside try-scorer Charles Piutau, turned a helpless Ben Ransom into knots before crossing over and putting New Zealand in front.

The England full back did not deserve the treatment - he was the game's most explosive attacker and one of few players who found room in the face of a sea of black. He runs with the balance of Ben Foden, and Saracens are blessed to have yet another bright England talent on their books.

A try just before half-time, when New Zealand prop Ben Tameifuna emerged from a crawling pile of ants, gave the defending champions a 10-point cushion, but England still refused to cave.

Ten minutes later an inside flick from fly-half George Ford set up Matt Kvesic, who stumbled over the line with defenders hanging off him but was denied by the television match official.

Farrell's Premiership class soon came to the fore in the second half with surely the pass of the tournament. It floated over the defence and into the hands of Thomas, who this time turned try-scorer.

The final English flourish was a break from Elliot Daly - fresh from dazzling Twickenham crowds at the Daily Mail Schools Cup final last month - who broke a tackle then lofted a perfect chip for Wade to pounce on.

It was England's last chance to celebrate before the Baby Blacks tightened the screw and saw the game out. A kick-and-chase try from Beauden Barrett and the metronomic boot of Gareth Anscombe saw to that.

Afterwards England captain Alex Gray admitted: 'It was a tough battle and I imagine it was quite good watching. We came here thinking we could take it and if things had been different way we could have done.'

Coach Rob Hunter, a keen mountaineer who found this one peak too high to climb, looked to the future, saying: 'We're terribly disappointed but the guys will be much better for the experience and we'll see some of these guys in a white shirt against a black shirt again in the future.

'New Zealand were really strong at the breakdown. We seemed to take a little bit of time to deal with some of the interpretations there and they were very physical in that area and at times that just let them off the hook. We couldn't keep the pressure on because they kept winning some of the small battles.'

The positives. This England team is oozing with the ball-playing quality that has been so lacking from the senior team since 2003.

If Martin Johnson's men can show as much heart in New Zealand as their Under 20s showed here last night, there could be one hell of a party Down Under this year.

Deflated: England know they came close to pulling off a major upset

England 2 Switzerland 2

On the day Wayne Rooney told the world he had been given a hair transplant, Fabio Capello was left tearing his out as England dropped two precious points in their bid to reach next summer's European Championship finals.

Switzerland profited from a pair of inexplicable errors from the normally solid Joe Hart to establish a two-goal cushion.

Although England rallied through a Frank Lampard penalty and a superb second-half effort from Ashley Young, who had replaced the Chelsea man at half-time, the hosts could not force home a third.

Darren Bent blew their best chance when he blasted over with the goal at his mercy and Stewart Downing also wasted a glorious opportunity right at the death.

But a year after their World Cup misery, England extended a winless streak on home soil to four matches for the first time in 30 years, Admir Mehmedi coming far too close for comfort to snatching all three points for the visitors in stoppage time.

It meant a loss of initiative in Group G and what now seems certain to be a tense fight with Montenegro, who host England in Podgorica on October 7.

With far too many fans still outside when the game started, England began with a wobble.
Switzerland had already served notice that the injection of youth by coach Ottmar Hitzfeld made them a far more potent outfit than they have been for some years.

Even whilst they were beating eventual winners Spain in their opening World Cup match last summer, their strategy was largely a defensive one.

By the time they were blitzed by England in Basle last September, they had reached the end of their shelf life. It appeared England had not been monitoring their opponents because after a bright start, they were pulled apart far too easily.

Hart denied Gokhan Inler, Eren Derdiyok fired over, then Xherdan Shaqiri sent a curling effort towards the far corner which England's hitherto confident and undisputed No 1 goalkeeper kept out with a smart save.

It took an excellent Ashley Cole tackle to block Valon Behrami's route to goal, and England could easily have been behind before the twin aberration that left them in huge trouble.

There appeared no obvious danger when Barnetta floated his first free-kick to the far post.
As Rio Ferdinand went for it, Hart remained rooted to the spot. By the time Ferdinand had failed to make contact, his movement was too late and the ball crept in at the far post.

When asked about the potential for making mistakes earlier this week, Hart said he accepted it as part of the job. He might not be so reflective about such matters now, given he was also culpable for Switzerland's second.Hart could justifiably argue that England would not have conceded had Theo Walcott and James Milner done their jobs and remained static and together in a two-man wall.

Once they split, Barnetta had a huge hole to drive his shot through. Hart paid the ultimate price for not stationing anyone on the near post, only able to stick out a foot to help the ball over the line in his desperation to reach it.

England instantly halved the deficit thanks to Johan Djourou's ill-advised lunge on Arsenal team-mate Jack Wilshere.

There was more conviction about the penalty award than Lampard's spot-kick. It still found its way in though, under the body of Diego Benaglio.Hart delivered a few angry comments towards a cameraman who got rather too close after the half-time whistle had gone.

When England returned, they did so without Lampard.

The introduction of Young did not require the validation of his equaliser. However, that Lampard was the man to make way represented a bold move on Capello's behalf, and one that could be a pointer to the Chelsea man's 86-cap England career given Steven Gerrard will eventually return from injury.

Young's impact was quick and brilliant. Profiting from assistance by Milner and Leighton Baines, who had replaced an injured Cole, the winger many expect to join Manchester United this summer found the bottom corner with a precise shot.

It mirrored the goalscoring order from that awful night against Croatia that spawned all those 'Wally with the Brolly' gags.

England lost on that occasion. This time they fancied their chances of ending up on the winning side.

After Wilshere had been booked for a lunge on Barnetta, Young forced a save out of Benaglio with a powerful shot.

The rebound rolled invitingly to Bent. But with only the goalkeeper to beat, he blasted over.
Young then clipped a first-time effort over after Milner had outsmarted Djourou by the touchline.
England could get no closer.

A year on from South Africa, Capello's anniversary was no cause for celebration.
